Cinelli Model B

Sometimes it's a very small world...

Back in February, 2011, I received a note with photos from Gordon Claughton about his Cinelli which he purchased in Singapore in 1961. Fast forward to this past week when I received a note from Robert Freeman with photos of a restoration he did on a "1961 Cinelli from Singapore". Robert had come to own this Cinelli and I was able to put him in contact with Gordon.

"What a great piece of luck to hook up with him, 51 years after he bought the bike," wrote Robert. "Gordon said the bike went away for awhile and he got it back eventually. Had been repainted 3 times before I got it. The bike means so much more to me now."

Robert is co-owner of Elliott Bay Bicycles and does restorations of Cinelli bikes (and other makes). His gallery of this Cinelli restoration is here.

Serial number 6286.

1951 Cinelli Advertisement

My sincere thanks to Gary, from England, who writes, "Researched Cinelli as a teenager racing in the early 70s. I was saving up for one but went for a Hetchins as there was a 3 months wait for a Cinelli my size.

I will will try to find the rest of the Cinelli stuff that has been stashed away for the last 30 years. This advertisement comes from the November 8, 1951 pullout supplement from the Earls Court cycle show."

As you can see three models were offered:

MODEL S.C. LUSSO, with Reynolds 531 tubing

MODEL C CORSA

There were five styles of handlebars available:

Koblet

The ad was placed by the sole importer and general distributor for the UK,
VECEL & CO ,LTD 17 MOXON STREET LONDON W1.

Prices at the time were in pound shillings and pence.

1952 Cinelli Model B

A reader writes in with the following about his circa 1952 Cinelli Model B:

"The 50s Cinelli frame was on its way to a landfill somewhere in Germany, when it was offered to me. I only had to pay postage to get it to the USA.

It took over 5 years for the restoration with frame work, paint, chrome, period Cinelli decals made and careful component selection.

I decided to have the frame painted colors that pay homage to the Bianchi team of the 30s and 40s- Bianchi blue and ivory. Both Cino and Giotto both rode for Bianchi during the golden era of Italian cycling.

This Cinelli frame is unique because its built to accept the Simplex Competition and Tour de France derailleurs. Note that the the derailleurs are Italian Simplex."
