the "CX" Mystery is Solved

Reader Gianluca, who owns a VETTA that has the CX markings, gave me a tip that the framebuilder of the "CX" marked framesets was Antonio Taverna of Padova.

I have been in touch with Sig. Taverna and I asked if he was the framebuilder. He responded with, "Yes, these frames were made in 1982-1984 when the Cinelli framebuilding components were available to framebuilders."

Cinelli had previously verified that these were not Cinelli made frames.

Here are examples of CX framesets (click on images to enlarge):

The Mystery of the "CX" Solved?

We have had three "CX" bikes appear here that readers thought might be a Cinelli because of the use of Cinelli frame building components; the photos are here. Cinelli has said that they did not make these frames.

I received a note from reader Gordon saying that, "I send you some pics of a NOS Basso CX frame I purchased some years ago in Italy. It was unused, the fork uncut and it had the original paintwork; the dealer also offered me another one in a different size also NOS."

Cinelli "CX", Part III

As already mentioned Cinelli has stated that they did not make these "CX" frames. These photos are from a reader in Vienna of his CX which is nickle plated with the lugs painted black.

Other photos of CX frames in Cinelli Only are here and here.

Note that the seatstay engraving is the same as the engraving on this BB:

Cinelli "CX", Part II

These appear to be the same frameset we mentioned previously which Cinelli said they did not make, see here. If anyone has details to the contrary please contact me. Since these are better photos I've posted them.

1980s Cinelli "CX" ???

I am not familiar with the Cinelli "CX" model. Does anyone have any information about this model? These photos appeared on a recent France ebay listing with the statement, "it can be a CINELLI CX, impossible to know because the sticker is missing". 58cm. Notice that the top tube and downtube are crimped; tubing is Columbus SLX. You can click on photos to enlarge them.

I found another reference to a CX, in 56cm, which stated, "This is a very unusual Cinelli road frame from I think is from the early 80s. The lugs all have the Cinelli winged symbol as does the rear brake bridge and fork crown."

NOTE: From Cinelli this response, "Hi Angelo, I spoke to a few of my colleagues this morning and came to the conclusion with them that this frame is almost certainly a fake or unofficial Cinelli. We never used that lugset, but even more telling is the top tube with its “master” style shaping which is a give away that the tube is in fact not even Columbus but an Oria tube shaped by Silva. It is the tubing which makes us almost certain that this frame while certainly not a production model, is not even a prototype."

Note: subsequent to the above entry the following photo courtesy of www.hilarystone.com of another "CX" labled frameset:
